The Altai breed takes their name from the Altai Mountains where they have been bred for centuries. This is one of the oldest breeds native to Siberia and extreme weather conditions have bred a solid and tough mount.

Updating The Breed

Starting in the early 20th century a renewed interest was taken in the breed and different bloodlines were introduced to Altai stock. The resulting animals were larger with a higher capacity for work.

Keeping The Old Blood Alive

Although there has been an introduction of other bloodlines, there is always a control group left of purebred Altai animals to preserve the prehistoric bloodlines.

Bands of these pureblood animals still roam some regions of the upper Altai and their offspring continue to carry the physical attributes of their ancestors.
