Bird of Paradise
Names: Casesalpinia gilliesii, Pride of Barbados, Mexican bird of paradise
Description: Shrub or small tree, alternate leaves. Flowers grow in clusters with 5 petals and are usually yellow or orange with red a stamen. Seeds grow in an elongated pod.
Concern level: Only during drought conditions, unpalatable.
Toxic parts: The raw seed
Symptoms: Noticed about 30 minutes after ingestion, lack of coordination, colic, diarrhea
Danger: The toxicity is low, so your animal would have to eat a lot to get sick.
