We are celebrating our horse artists on a weekly basis & today it’s all about the work of Jennifer Pratt, another artist I found via Twitter.
Artist of the Week
Today’s artist paints & draws exceptionally detailed portraits, infused with personality and almost real enough to walk off the page. She’s a big warmblood fan with a personal interest in bloodlines and Canadian Sport Horses.

The first artist interview ever published on The Equinest was Emily of Texas and I found her via Twitter. Since then the list has grown along with my appreciation for art.
Artist of the Week
Today’s artist paints colorful & vibrant pieces, full of character & warmth. Interestingly enough she’s not just into horses, her mount of choice is Mammoth Jackstock.

Seems as thought I’m on a military horse art kick, and I think the Juliusz Kossak may be my favorite so far. A Polish painter from a long line of artists, he became well known for his historical paintings & illustrations.
Childhood Influences
His personal experience growing up in Poland during the military partitions made a mark on his art although he was often commissioned for portraits as well. The battlefield was Juliusz’s specialty, he immortalized battle scenes, and did many portraits of military personnel with their mounts.
The movement & presence he captures in his work is magnificent and his attention to detail really brings his subjects to life.

Depicting horses with an animated, illustrative flair, Carle Vernet was a horse lover from a young age. His intimate experience with the animal is evident in his work, as is his passion for the subject.
Surviving The Trauma
Carl lived and worked during the French Revolution, and was personally touched when his sister saw the guillotine. After this tragedy his style changed dramatically and he created the drawings below.
These drawings of Napoleon’s Grand Armee uniforms won Carle a great deal of acclaim. His attention to detail is magnificent and each portrait is infused with the personality of its subjects.

Perhaps all unicorn lovers have seen these Lady and the Unicorn tapestries (they’ve been around a while). However, many may not realize that it is a series of pieces, each one depicting a different sense.

Asmus Jacob Carstens seems to be a bit of a mystery (online anyway) I had trouble finding any information about the artist himself. (& I’m not entirely sure this is the artists name – thanks to a commenter for providing a bit of info about him).
Uniform Art
Although he isn’t well documented in English online, his art is worth a look. He was a Danish portrait artist in Germany who clearly had a thing for men in uniform.
The images below come from the Gmundener Prachtwerk published in 1761 which is a collection of historical uniforms of the Hanover army during the Seven Years War.

Alt-Oldenburger
Otto Eerelman was a painter, lithographer & engraver who was probably best known for his paintings of horses and dogs.
The Art of Horse Breeds
The images below come from an album of art entitled Horse Breeds which was published in 1898, (there were 40 in total).
Otto possessed a detailed knowledge of horseflesh and the ability to transfer that to canvas.
This paired with the author’s knowledge on the subject made this one of the leading horse books of its day. It became quite valuable and highly sought after.

The Thoroughbred horse has held the fascination of artists since the breeds beginnings in the 17th & 18th century.
This high energy breed and racing itself began in England, but the trend of horse racing took hold worldwide and many different countries imported English animals to create their own Thoroughbred bloodlines.
Recently I’ve been doing some research through public domain art and was delighted to see so many artistic representations of this spirited breed.
