Base Coat Colors

There are a rainbow of different horse colors out there, but each one stems from one of two basic colors.

The black gene can be found in most breeds and will show no brown or red hairs at all.

There are two different types of black horse:

• Non-fading black
• Fading black

Also found in most breeds, chestnut horses have no black hairs, their coat is red with red points.

There are three different chestnut shades:

• Liver / black chestnut
• Chestnut / sorrel
• Blonde / Sandy Chestnut
