It’s Monday again and time to learn about another plant that has it in for your horse. Today we’ll take a closer look at a plant that is named most appropriately, the Death Camas.

A Little About Death Camas

Zigadenus is Death Camas, also called Meadow Death Camas, Poison Sego Lily & Lobelia. This is a grass-like perennial with v shaped leaves, small white, cream or green flowers that grow in clusters and three lobed capsule fruit.

How Dangerous Is It?

Similar to many of the toxic plants, this one isn’t palatable to horses and would only be consumed under dire circumstances. However it’s highly toxic and one horse lovers should take note of.

All parts of this plant are toxic and can be fatal to equines.

What To Look For

You know your animal the best, so you should know when something is amiss. Death Camas toxicity symptoms generally occur between 1 and 8 hourse of ingestion and can include drooling, loss of coordination, diarrhea, reduced heart rate, weakness, tremors & convulsions.
