The Horses of Juliusz Kossak

Colonel Berek JoseleqiczSeems as thought I’m on a military horse art kick, and I think the Juliusz Kossak may be my favorite so far. A Polish painter from a long line of artists, he became well known for his historical paintings & illustrations.

Childhood Influences

His personal experience growing up in Poland during the military partitions made a mark on his art although he was often commissioned for portraits as well. The battlefield was Juliusz’s specialty, he immortalized battle scenes, and did many portraits of military personnel with their mounts.

The movement & presence he captures in his work is magnificent and his attention to detail really brings his subjects to life.

Horses in Uniform

Although I’m not huge on the idea of horses serving our military purposes, I have an appreciation for the art. If you like these, you may also enjoy some other military artists, Carle Varnet & Carstens.
