Name Your Horse Markings Pt. 2 – The Legs

Like facial markings, leg markings are horse fingerprints. Identifiable marks that enable us to pick our horse out of a heard with no hesitation.

Here is a quick look at each leg marking for reference. For more in-depth knowledge learn how to define your horses leg markings.

Leg Markings

Coronet

A white stripe around the coronary band about an inch above the hoof.

Pastern

A white leg mark that starts at the hoof stops just below the fetlock.

Fetlock

A white leg mark that reaches onto the fetlock.

Sock

A white leg mark that reches higher than the fetlock but not as hight as the knee joint.

Stocking

A white leg mark that reaches to the bottom of the knee joint or higher.

Partial

A leg marking that only reaches up one side of the leg.

High White

A leg stocking that extends well above the knee joint which can extend onto the flanks and belly.
