About J&M Acres

J&M Acres Horse RescueJ&M Acres Horse Rescue is a non-profit rescue in Maple Ridge, BC. We rescue most of our horses from auction or from off the racetrack. Our aim is to get as many horses as we can off the meat truck and adopted into loving homes so that we are able to rescue more.

We are 100% volunteer run and are here for the purpose of rescuing horses and helping them find long-term, loving homes.

The Story

In 1995 we rescued our first horse; a badly abused oldie, dubbed “Lucky”, that was being run through the auction for slaughter. Since then we have purchased 300+ horses destined for slaughter and placed them in good homes. Our rescues are all breeds of horses and all ages from 6 months to 36 years old that have gone on to live happy, productive lives.

Meet the Rescues
Casper

Casper
Casper is an 8 year old, roughly 15hh, Quarter Horse X gelding. He is a very sweet boy.

He was just picked up on Halloween from the local auctions. He was very anxious on the way to our rescue, but settled in pretty quickly with the other horses around. He is broke, but will require an intermediate or advanced rider. I took him out for his first ride the other day and found that he does have some anxiety to work through. I also discovered that he has wonderful movement and gaits. With some work and patience he will be a wonderful riding horse. He is sound and his feet look were just done. He also loads and unloads well in the trailer.

Lilly

Lilly
Lilly is a 3 Y/O, Thoroughbred mare. She is around 14.2hh now, but may still grow.

She was rescued at the same auction as Noss. She was a bit anxious when she first arrived, but has turned into a darling little mare who would sit in your lap if she could! She is one of the first to greet you at the pasture and often will not leave your side. She is not broke, but her temperament is quiet and willing and she would make a steady lifelong partner for anyone willing to spend time with her.

Animotion (AKA Annie)

Animotion
Annie is a 15hh, 2 1/2 year old Standardbred filly. She was sent to J&M Acres from a trainer who works at the track.

Apparently she was nasty and head-shy (which she wasn’t), they just didn’t treat her nicely. Anyways, I broke her myself three months ago and worked her under-saddle. She is a great mare with a very defined and bold personality. She is quiet, willing and calm, but very brave when it comes to new things. She loads and unloads well and has been lightly started under-saddle. She can walk/trot/canter and her canter is especially nice. She has even been out on the trail!

Crystal

Crystal
Crystal is roughly 16hh and is a 15 year old, Thoroughbred mare. She is well-broke and a very friendly and experienced.

She walks, trots and canters well under saddle. She is a very quiet and easy-going and just needs clear cues. I have worked her under-saddle a few times. She had anxiety before (no doubt due to a past, bad rider) so she used to run through my fingers. Now, though, she is calm and she bends and gives to the bit. She is pretty darn bombproof and would be great for a beginner rider who is gentle in their hands. We took her out for our Ever So Clever Halloween Fundraiser and she did great in a place she had never been and behaved well in the ring! She has also been on a few trail rides and crosses creeks and travels up and down hills and rocky terrain without a problem.

Empress

Empress
Empress is a 21 year old, Holsteiner mare; roughly 15hh.

She was surrendered by her owner who could no longer care for her and was transported over from Vancouver Island. Empress is an extremely sweet mare who loves attention. She will follow you around her pen and she loves being groomed. She has never been ridden and so she will be adopted out by donation as a companion mare. She does have her original papers too.

Firstly, thank you again for posting another listing of our rescues! Secondly, looks like Casper is getting picked up tonight and heading to a new home! He will be on a two-week trial with the new owner!
