About J&M Acres
J&M Acres Horse Rescue is a non-profit rescue in Maple Ridge, BC. We rescue most of our horses from auction or from off the racetrack. Our aim is to get as many horses as we can off the meat truck and adopted into loving homes so that we are able to rescue more.
We are 100% volunteer run and are here for the purpose of rescuing horses and helping them find long-term, loving homes.
The Story
In 1995 we rescued our first horse; a badly abused oldie, dubbed “Lucky”, that was being run through the auction for slaughter. Since then we have purchased 300+ horses destined for slaughter and placed them in good homes. Our rescues are all breeds of horses and all ages from 6 months to 36 years old that have gone on to live happy, productive lives.
Prancer is a 3 year old, 15hh Standardbred mare also rescued at a local auction. Her registered name is Fandango and her foaling date was May 31, 2007.
She was never raced. She has come from an abusive home and deserves a quiet, gentle and loving person. She is broke to ride and drive. She is a sweet and well-mannered mare who is very quiet and willing. She loads and unloads well and would make a great trail or pleasure horse. She also did great in our local Christmas parade. Totally a bombproof mare! Her adoption fee is $500.
Ozzy is a 5 year old owner surrender. He is a 14.3hh Standardbred gelding.
He is a darling who was on his way to slaughter when the boarding facility owner intervened and called us. He came in thin and covered in rain rot. He has since put on lots of weight and his rain rot is slowly getting under control. He is supposed to be broke to ride, but we have not yet had the chance to try him out ourselves. He is a super quiet, friendly and lovable little gelding. Adoption fee is by donation.
Animotion (AKA Annie) is a 15hh, 2 1/2 year old Standardbred filly. Her foaling date is: April 22, 2008.
She is a darling and friendly mare who has a defined and bold personality. She is quiet, willing and calm, but very brave when it comes to new things. We started her lightly under-saddle in August and she has had roughly ten rides. She can walk/trot/canter easily under-saddle. Her canter also happens to be especially nice and smooth. We have even had the chance to take her out on the trail. She is a very steady mare who needs lots of stimulation. She is a smart girl who would do well in competition where she is always being challenged. After a bit more schooling under-saddle she would make a great prospect for almost anything. Her adoption fee is $500.
Lilly is a 3 Y/O, Thoroughbred mare around 14.3hh. She is a darling mare and would sit in your lap if she could!
She is one of the first to greet you at the pasture and often will not leave your side. She is broke and had 10 rides put on her by a past owner. She was ridden mostly in just a halter and no bit. She knows how to back up and move off of the leg. As she still requires some more training under-saddle to get the swing of things, she would be best suited to an intermediate or above level rider. She is a very sweet girl. Her temperament is quiet and willing and she would make a steady lifelong partner for anyone willing to spend time with her. Here is her pedigree. Adoption Fee $500
Amaretto is a 4 Y/O Standardbred mare who was born June 19, 2006. Her registered name is Sammy Jo’s Secret.
She was rescued from the stockyard and came from the same barn as Kahlua. Amaretto stands about 16hh and is a stunning and very sweet mare. She is broke to drive but not yet broke to ride. She will be a very easy mare to start and work under-saddle and we hope to get her going soon! Her adoption fee is $500.
Kahlua is a 4 Y/O Standardbred mare who was born April 28, 2006. Her registered name is Garden Gate Final.
She was rescued from the stockyard and came from the same barn as Amaretto. Kahlua stands about 15.3hh. She is a stunning and cuddly mare who seems to love attention. She is broke to drive but not yet broke to ride. She will also be a very easy mare to start and work under-saddle and we hope to get her going soon! Her adoption fee is $500.
Madison is a 15 year old Thoroughbred mare.
We picked her up from the North Fraser Therapeutic Riding Association because she has an off hip and so they couldn’t continue using her as they need completely sound horses only. She is suitable for light riding if you are mindful of her hip. She was loaded and unloaded well and had good manners on the ground. She is a sweet lady who has really come out of her shell so far since being at the rescue. She is upper-level in the herd and she is thriving in the pasture right now. Adoptable by donation.
