Mustang is written by Deanne Stillman who gives a detailed story about wild horses on the North American continent, from prehistory to present day.

Chapters Include

  • Horses evolution on North America
  • The animals the conquistadors brought to North America
  • The horses role in building the American frontier
  • The plight of mustangs today

Deanne began work on Mustang ten years ago when she learned that 34 wild horses had been gunned down outside Reno, NV. Two of the accused were Marines, and one was stationed at Twentynine Palms, CA.

Timing is Everything
The timing was interesting because she was just finishing writing a book entitled “Twentynine Palms: A True Story of Murder, Marines, and the Mojave” which is about two girls killed by a Marine in 29 Palms after the Gulf War.

This coincidence struck a cord so deeply in her that Deanne decided to tell the story of horses in our country. The question that Mustang asks is why are we, a cowboy nation, destroying the horse we rode in on?

About The Author
Deanne’s mother was one of the first women in the country to ride professionally on the racetrack as an exercise boy. Coming from a line of horse lovers means she spent much of her life around horses, 20 years of which she spent exploring California on horseback.

Having An Impact
She has been speaking at book events around the country since June when her book came out. This publicity has been one of the primary drivers of the recent grassroots campaign to save 30,000 wild horses that were condemned by the BLM. A plan that has been postponed due to the intervention of Madeleine Pickens.
