Horse Breeds Beginning With A

Horse breeds that start with ALately I’ve been hard at work on my breeds section, so it’s on my mind. Which means I’ll be writing about them from time to time, I’m not joking when I say there are a lot of them. Plus I’m growing proud of how comprehensive the list has become.

As I’m adding them by letter I decided to share them the same way & dedicate a post to each letter of the alphabet. I’ve already profiled a few of the breeds that begin with A, but the list seems to take a life of it’s own and keeps growing.

Writing about each one has opened my eyes to an entirely new world of horses I’d never heard of. My favorite breed changes every time I sit down to write about the next one.

Big Daddy A’s

In a section so large, it is really difficult to play favorites, they are all pretty amazing animals. However, first in line for respect has to be both the Andalusian & the Arabian, ancient breeds whose blood flows through almost every modern breed known today.

Personal Favorite A’s

While I love the two granddaddy’s above, I have a thing for Abaco Barbs (just love that Barb profile on a pinto); the glowing, showy Akhal-Teke uniquely built for the desert; the American Mustang because let’s face it, they’ve had a rough go lately; the Ardennes because they are huge & ancient; and last the Asturcón because they were once referred to as Hobby Horses.

The Whole List

Here it is, the full list of breeds that begin with A. If I’m missing something, let me know and I’ll add it to my list (don’t want to forget anybody).

This is just amazing. I had no idea there were this many breeds of horses and this is just the A’s.
I love horses but have not been closely connected to them. Have many people in our area that have them and I go to races at Colonial Downs but have no idea what breeds of horses they are except for he Thorobreds of course.
    Thanks for doing this.

I was just looking at the page on the American Cream Draft and noticed that you said it is the only draft breed native to the US. You might want to check out the Sugarbush Draft Horse. 😉

We’ve updated the breeds section and I’m trying to get them all into place – that means separating the donkeys & asses, hybrids & ponies into their own categories. It’s a big job!

hello!! I found a pic/breed of a horse that you did not have listed……… it was on pinterest and there were several pics and descriptions, thought you’d like to know, here’s the name and some info: Auvergne – The Auvergne horse (French cheval d’Auvergne) is a breed of light draught horse from the Auvergne region of south central France. I wasn’t sure if you had it listed somewhere else under F for French or something, but just thought i’d share!! and once again, TY for this site! <3 it, and can't express enough how much I've learned and love finding these breeds!!! 😀
