Horse Breeds Beginning With K

Horse breeds that start with K As I move on to other tasks after finishing the breeds I find myself looking for more obscure breeds in the hopes I’ll find more. Not only was it fun to write them, but it’s fun to share some of my favorites as well.

If you haven’t met the rest of the alphabet, be sure to do so A | B | C | D | E | F | G | H | I | J. Today it’s about breeds that start with K, from the handsome Kabarda that comes from ancient Turkoman stock to the athletic KWPN or Dutch Warmblood horse that has made a name for themselves in the show ring.

The K’s are another big category, so there is a lot of new breeds to meet!

Big Daddy K’s

In fact, the K’s are a pretty diverse bunch and there are some incredibly old breeds to be discovered incluging the Karabair which is one of the oldest breeds originating in central Asia; the Kazakh which comes from parts of Russia & China where it has been bred since the 5th century BC; the Kiso of Japan which has been bred as a war mount for the last millennia; and the Kyrgyz developed on the steppes of Asia & Siberia 4000 years ago.

Personal Favorite K’s

Among the K’s there is a fantastic variety of animals – so much so that I had a difficult time choosing my favorites. It was a tough job, but here they are. I like the Kathiawari who has ears that are even more curved than those of the Marwari; the handsome & fiery Kiger Mustang, especially when they are grullo; the golden Kinsky Horse who was Europe’s first warmblood sporthorse; and the colorful Knabstrupper one of the few appaloosa sport horse breeds.

What’s Your Favorite K?
