White Horses in Art

Horse, Hound and Boy - Carl SteffeckAs my appreciation for horse art grows I tend to look for more specific artists and subjects. That said, I thought I’d explore the world of horse art through color. There are a few of them that seem to be quite popular colors for artists.

White Horse

Today I’m focused on white horses in art so I searched high and low to find some unique and interesting representations. The white horse has been attributed to many different connotations, from drugs to the devil (perhaps because they were often used as war mounts). But I want to dispel those negative ideas and show just how beautiful & artistic they can be.

There is just something about a pure white animal that makes us all think of unicorns.

Not Enough White?

Don’t worry, I’m not finished. I’m going to mix things up and share the art of other horse colors next, but stay tuned for pt. 2 of the white horses too. For now why not check out some more horses of the artistic masters.

I couldn’t agree more in terms of your comment about a white animal and it’s relation to a unicorn.. I’m a fine art photographer and I captured a horse in a canopy of trees one morning ..it was
really magical. The lighting was just perfect and all i could think of was that I had found a unicorn..

They are beautiful animals..so majestic..true works of art..

    thanks for sharing..

    Hi!
Nice collection! But the Delacroix horse does not belong here. All the other horses shown are (genetically) grey (dark eyes, dark skin). This one is either a dominant white or a cremello (2x creme gene on chestnut base colour). Just have a look at the muzzle and the fetlocks (and the eyes of course and the surrounding skin). This is how to distinguish even on old paintings a “standard grey” from the “special” colours.
And due to the tips of the ears and the colour of the nostrils I’d say that Sir Galahad’s horse probably is not grey, either, although the eyes are dark (might be due to the artist, who did not like the blue eyes).

Cheers & keep on collecting those nice pictures!
