Abstang – Horse Breed Of The Week

Mustang & Arabian

The Abstang is a relatively new breed and one that doesn’t have much published information available. However the mix of Arabian & Mustang blood is an interesting one indeed.

Both bloodlines have incredibly old roots which have been shaped over hundreds of years, one by environment and the other through selective breeding.

This mix combines the hardy constitution of the Mustang and the high energy stamina of the Arabian. The resulting animal might as well be made of steel.

How It Happened

This breed is the brainchild of a woman named Michele Brown in the 1990’s. She crossed an unrefined mustang with an Arabian interested in the characteristics of their potential offspring.

From there a registry was formed in 1993 to recognize the breed and has influenced a number of Mustang-Arabian crosses.
