Crotalaria
Name: Fabaceae, rattlepod, rattlebox, sesbane, coffeebean, bladderpod, danglepod.
Description: Tall annual. Flowers are yellow / red and grow in showy clusters. Fruit is a long, flat seed pod that rattles when dried.
Concern level: Only during drought conditions, unpalatable. Can be incorporated into hay.
Toxic parts: The entire plant is toxic.
Symptoms: Yawning, weakness, jaundice of mucous membranes, lack of appetite, loss of coordination, aimless walking, chewing motions
Danger: Contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids which cause liver failure, called “walking disease” or “sleepy staggers”. Can be fatal.
