Fabaceae Crotalaria, Rattlepod, Rattlebox, Sesbane, Coffeebean, Bladderpod, Danglepod.

Description

Tall annual. Flowers are yellow / red and grow in showy clusters. Fruit is a long, flat seed pod that rattles when dried.

Concern Level

Only during drought conditions, unpalatable. Can be incorporated into hay.

Symptoms

Yawning, weakness, jaundice of mucous membranes, lack of appetite, loss of coordination, aimless walking, chewing motions

Danger

Contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids which cause liver failure, called “walking disease” or “sleepy staggers”. Can be fatal.
