Names: Ilex
Description: Evergreen / deciduous shrubs or small trees. Leaves are shiny, dark green with wide, spine tipped sections. Flowers vary by species. Fruits are bright red / purple / black and grow in clusters.
Concern level: Only during drought conditions, unpalatable.
Toxic parts: Berries and leaves
Symptoms: Gastrointestinal upset, difficulty swallowing, blurred vision, irregular heartbeat, convulsions, death.
Danger: Contains ilicin which is toxic specifically to the digestive system, nervous system and cardiovascular system. Can be fatal.
