Indian Rubber Plant
Names: Ficus elastica, rubber tree, India rubber plant / bush, snake tree, assam rubber
Description: Part of the banyan group of figs. Tree grows very large on an irregular trunk which grows buttressing roots to anchor in the soil for support. Leaves are broad, shiny, waxy and oval. Flowers are small and nondescript. Fruit is small, oval and yellow / green.
Concern level: Only during drought conditions, unpalatable. Exposure to the sap can cause irritation.
Toxic parts: The sap is toxic
Symptoms: Irritation, redness and swelling of mouth and throat, gastrointestinal upset, diarrhea.
Danger: Sap contains unknown toxin which irritates the skin on contact.
