Horse Breeds From Belarus

Belarus FlagI’ve been enjoying my theoretical trip around the world to share the horse breeds of each country. I’ve researched a HUGE list of horse breeds and it’s interesting to look at each one in the context of their origins. Today we take a look at the breeds of Belarus.

Interesting Fact

There have been horses in Belarus for a long time – the Polesian Horse is a descendant of the Tarpan which has inhabited the area since the 2nd century BC. Evidence shows that this breed has been bred regionally since the 1st century AD.

Made of Necessity

The other breed widely found in and considered native to Belarus is their Harness Horse. Developed using native horses (probably similar to the Polesian ancestors) and crossing them with draft types and the Dole. These animals were developed for agricultural use specifically in wooded areas with swampy & sandy soil.

I remember how strongly you called out the condition of a horse used in an advertising campaign as a blog post about a year ago. Rarely do I comment on stuff like this, but it saddens me to look at the picture chosen to illustrate the breed. A chain around a horses neck through front legs that are hobbled? What a cruel and dangerous way to restrict a horse’s movement (what happens if he spooks or is attacked?).
