The Blue Eyed Horses of Gary Minshall

Gary Minshall's Blue Eyed HorsesAwhile back I did a couple of posts about blue eyed horses & the response I got was overwhelming from people who loved their blue eyed animals. I haven’t forgotten any of those submissions and I will post them in the weeks to come.

Bring On Those Baby Blues!

Perhaps the most enthusiastic response I received was from Gary Minshall, a photographer I’ve interviewed in the past. His perspective is unique and he has some smashing images of blue-eyed animals that he allowed me to share with you.

As with previous posts, I’d love to see more blue-eyed submissions and if you have a horse with pretty peepers & want them posted in the next blue eyed post shoot me an email with your pic.

Awesome shots! Number 6 seems to have an exaggerated shape of Texas etched on his nose and Number 8 the profile of an “Old Man”! Love ’em all, keep clicking the camera!

They are all so wonderful! I like the picture Of the chestnut? with the white blaze that circles right back up the his blue eye. It’s the one, shown here, with the background of sunlit, copper-colored horses as a background–the close-up. Beautiful composition, gorgeous color–I think it’s one of “The Ones!”

I love them all. Every blue eyed horse here seems to have it’s own story to tell. I lean towards the close ups because you can see more detail in the face and eyes. But you can’t beat seeing that one blue eyed horse in a herd like that. Sticks out like a beautiful blue thumb…

I agree with Jasmine. That Chestnut with the two blue eyes is eerie and also unusually beautiful at the same time. Is he also the one in your (first) favorite shot?

These are all GREAT pictures Gary! I think if I had to pick one, it would be the 7th one. I love the contrast of the black horse and his blue eyes…but they’re all beautiful! The 3rd one looks like that horse in Hidalgo:-) I love them all!

I believe my favorite of these shots is the little white faced colt lying on the ground. His blue eyes just taking in the world around him. Thanks, Gary, for sharing your God given talent.

Susan – It’s all in the genes. There is one (or more) gene that switches off colour (brown/black) in the eye, just like it can do with the coat (albino horses). It’s recessive and not many horses carry this gene, so that’s why it’s not that common. I believe it is often connected to a lot of white colouring on the horse, that’s why you see it most in paints and horses with white faces.

Pictures are fascinating – loved #5 although they are all unique. Never thought much about animals with blue eyes, now I need to do research! Thank you for such a beautiful subject to look into.
