Horse Breeds From Canada

Canada FlagIt’s interesting to note that the size of the country seemingly has no effect on the number of horse breeds it has produced. I’ve researched an enormous list of horse breeds and it’s interesting to look at each one in the context of their origins. Today we take a look at the breeds of Canada.

Interesting Fact

Most of the breeds in Canada are relatively new ones. Indigenous horses died out in North America during the last Ice Age, so all equine breeds found there were brought there at some point or another. The newness of these breeds means that many of them were developed with modern needs in mind and they vary widely from sport horses to pacers to cutting horses.

A Natural Treasure

The Canadian wilderness is a formidable place for equines and the equine answer to that is the Canadian Horse. This is an animal who in Canada, is actually credited as an essential component in settling the territory. Originally from French animals brought to the New World they were essentially a mix of Breton & Norman horses. For centuries these animals were bred under harsh conditions with little outside influence. The result is a hardy animal which wears the pride of the Canadian people.
