I am trying to remember the name of a movie I saw on television….not sure if it was a “theater” movie or a “tv” movie. The owners realized the horse ran faster when it listened to music! And in the end, they played music for him to win the race. Any clue what the name of it is?? Thanks!
      Kitty

    5. Jessica

I am looking for a movie I thought it was called Dark Horse but can’t find it. They were trailering the horse and the horse trailer went over a cliff with the horse, long story short the woman ended up in a wheel chair and the horse was kept alive as the lady said he would walk again and he stayed in a sling in stall til he walked again. Any one know what i’m talking about? lol

  1. Paige

Lovely Eleanor, thanks for the add. I was hoping horse lovers would come up with movies I had missed. Hope everyone will do the same.

It was a fun post to put together and I like learning about movies I’ve not seen yet. :)

  5. Rudy(Chelsea)

My favorite movie is the Disney movie I’m not sure what it’s called I saw it in the 90’s it was about this boy who loses his horse because he couldn’t pay for it and the people that owned it were mean to it and the boy took off on the horse to get back to his Father. Does anyone know what that movie is called?

  6. stephanie

flash believe… Thats the horses name that the boy runs away on. He wins a race at a fair on him to get money to eat.. thats the movie i am remembering.

  7. Tinne

I saw a movie about a horse and a little girl.
The horse had a problem with his eyes, so the father of the girl made a pair of glasses so he could win the race.
Does anyone know what that movie is called?

  8. Lou Sisson

  14. Paige

Thanks for all of your comments. Unfortunately I’ve exhausted my memory banks of horse movies in this list. So those of you asking about specific movies, I’m hoping future readers will be able to help. :)

Should you come up with an answer somewhere else, please let me know so I can add it.

  15. Christopher

My wife and I remember a horse movie when we were kids called “Starfire”. In the story the little girl decides to brand herself to feel what the horse is going to go through. Anyone remember that movie? I can’t find any references to it.
You forgot “Pharlap” what a great race horse movie and about prejudice.

    1. Melanie T.

      Hey Christopher and others!

I just found this list and was going through the comment section; the movie noted here (Starfire) is actually SNOWFIRE; about a white stallion and little girl, Molly. In the movie the horse has been captured and Dad is going to brand the horse and has told little Molly that it won’t “hurt” the horse, so she takes the branding iron and is just about to brand herself when Dad notices. I’m sure this is the film being referred to.

Hope this helps! Oh, and the film was on broadcast TV back in 2008, and apparently some folks were able to record it. I got a copy of the film last year (November) and though it is not a crisp copy, it is quite viewable and the story comes through fine :) I’ve seen it on ebay as well.

      1. Juanita

You have missed The Green Grass of Wyoming, and a movie called Sand about a Chestnut stallion. They are both great movies. Also, the NBC mini-series that was shown in the late l970’s or early l980’s: Black Beauty. The story took place in Maryland, in Western Maryland. The movie stayed true to the book, but moved the story from England to Western Maryland.Great movie, very realistic.

      2. Becky

YES!! I was told it was “WILDFIRE” for the title, so that is why I never found it!
I remember seeing part of this movie back in 1969 or 1970 on a neighbor’s big television set (console…we didn’t have any at all then) and haven’t seen it since! Thank-you for the correct title; I am now trying to locate a personal copy! (This was the 9th or 10th “GOOGLE” site I checked & finally found the answer!)

    2. Overtha

The movie you are looking for was not called ” Star Fire”! It was called “Snow Fire”. (Snow Fire was white as the new fallen snow. Fire was his spirit, man was his foe.) These were some of the words to the opening theme song in the movie. Yes it was a good movie.

  16. Paige

    Hi Christopher,

I wasn’t able to find anything on Starfire, but I’ll keep an eye out for it. But Pharlap is already on the list (it’s one of my all-time favorites). :)

  17. Kitiara

What about National Velvet. Awsome movie, a girl wins a ‘rogue’ horse in a raffle draw and rides him in the grand national race. Based on true story.

  18. Bindia

There is a movie i thought you may want to add to the list titled, ‘Archer’s Adventure’ (1985) about a trainer’s apprentice who volunteers to deliver an untested racehorse 600 miles to take part in Australia’s richest horserace ever but in order to get there he is faced with Australia’s roughest terrain and bush rangers. it stars, Robert Coleby, Nicole Kidman & Brett Como

    best wishes,

    Bindia

  19. Paige

    Hi Bindia,

Thanks for the info, Archer’s Adventure sounds like an interesting horse flick. I’ve added it to the list & I’ll have to track down and watch it. :)

  20. meghann

I was looking through your list of wonderful horse movies and see that you are missing “Florian” Its a great older movie about a lipizzaner stallion :)

  21. Liina

    Thanks a lot!
I remembered seeing a wonderful horse movie as a child and wanted my children to see it now as well, but could not remember the name.
I found the right one quickly thanks to that list (it was The Black Stallion.
    Thank you!

  22. Bindia

You may want to add to the list: Primo Baby (1990) – Movie about a teenage foster child who is adopted by a rich rancher and turns a horse, destined for the slaughterhouse, into a champion racer.

    1. cynthia

the movie that has a girl and her horse that follow the races, and they fail in first time, but in the second time they win and complete the grand prix race because a boy teaches him. thats a great movie. it’s called “grand prix”.but that has a japan or korea words at the title. but its fun. go and buy one. how is the story of “pursuit honor”. what’s movie is that?is it nice movie?

  23. Jay Davies

Thank you Melissa. I’ve ordered it from Amazon. Perfect timing as my friend’s birthday is coming up :) Will make a nice surprise. Thank you for running this site Paige.

  24. Paige

Thanks to everyone for the info. The suggestions I could find have been added.

I’m glad the list is well received, it was a lot of fun to put together – except now I have a really looooong list of horse movies I want to buy. 😉

    1. Tash

All I remember is at the end a lady was waiting intill in it was her turn to do dressage then I think her x husband hurt her horses so she that to used her blind horse

  25. emma

“Amanda” is about a special Clydesdale that belongs to a stable hand that works on a horse farm. The young boy that lives there rides the clydesdale. Amanda then risks her life to save the young boy and his family after a car accident.

    1. Carly

You have forgotten a HUGE horse movie!! The Horse Whisperer!! I have a love/hate relationship with that movie..

      1. Paige

Eeek, that is a big oversight! Haven’t seen it yet, maybe that’s why. I’ll track it down and add it too.

      2. jen

is that the one where the two girls have an accident, and one dies with the horse but the other girl looses a leg and her horse is filled with fear but a horse whisperer saves him and the girl cause she finerly rides him again?

  26. Barbara

IMDB has info on Amanda, and I own the DVD that was only released in Australia. You may get lucky to hire it in a DVD store but it is getting hard to locate now.
Initially the boy does not ride the Clydesdale as he is frightened of horses and his father owns a horse farm. A riding accident when young turned him away from horses. His eyes are affected and the blacksmith helps to fix them. As his eyes improve he sees Amanda racing across the paddock in an almost glimmering glow, giving thought to her mystical powers. It does have funny moments, Amanda sees the reliance the boy has on the bike, and picks it up like a toothpick and dumps it somewhere else.
There is a barrel race at a show and the boy wants to ride his bike rather than a horse, much to the giggling crowd. Amanda comes up just as he lines up to race his bike that he now considers equal to any horse, and Amanda bows for him to get on her back. It is a beautiful movie, and the sight of the boy and the huge Clydesdale would be enough to frighten any child.

  27. Karen

There is also Wind Dancer 1993, where a girl is injured in a horse riding accident. Don’t think its that easy to get hold of anymore but its a tear-jerker!

  28. Elizabeth

You also forgot another great movie called Ready to Run. It’s about a girl who works at a racetrack and she has a special ability of being able to communicate with horses and bonds to a horse named Thunder Jam. A great Disney movie. Awesome list. Thanks for posting links to where you could get the movie because I was looking for Flash everywhere.

  29. Heather

Perhaps you all might know, there is a movie about a black andulusian or friesian, can’t remember which. Its set in the southwest, the troubled teen girl gets sent to live there. She and a native american fella steal the horse to train him for a rodeo.
Also another one about a teenage guy whose mom moves him out to the desert. He makes friends with an old indian guy who later jumps the horse off a cliff, but its like they were ghosts, I think. The kid played football and I think his dad was in jail, the horse I think was a paint or something like that. Any thoughts?

    1. Melissa

The one about the fresian that the girl rescues in the desert and barrel races is Coyote summer

  30. Sandy

My all time favorite movie has got to be Snowfire from the Family Classics channel. It’s about a litte girl on her father’s ranch and she can talk to horses. She befriends a white stallion who raids the ranch of it’s mares. But in the end she gets saves him from her father and other area ranchers.

Unfortuately, the movie is nowhere to be found. Family Classics lost the rights years ago. And the director/writer/producer was very upset that it was his only successful movie. After he passed his family got tired of people asking about it and supposely destroyed it. Perhaps there is a lone copy somewhere in a box of some tv studio.

        1. Nataie Osborne

Hello i was just wondering if you could make me a copy of Snowfire, heard it is a great movie. If you can, please e-mail me back…thank-you natalie osborne

      1. Carolyn

Hey I was reading the comments and list of the movies of horses, alot of them I remember and some I have forgotten but the one I love the most is SnowFire. Is that the one you have copies of? If so how much will it be to get a copy and how soon can I get it.
        Thanks for your info;

        God bless you and yours
        Carolyn

      2. Gayle Bryan

  31. Tamara

One of my all-time favs was ‘Dark Horse’ (1992) but NOT the one that is already listed. About a troubled teen who is doing communit service at a ranch and after a tragic floating accident, assists in rehabilitating a VERY troubled horse. Through bonding, both overcome adversity. Here is the IMDB link. Great 90s movie that I have had no success finding on DVD as yet. Quite a well-known cast too. Great list so far :)

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0104054/

    From Tamara (Australia)

  32. Jaki

there is one of my favorites that isnt on your list. its called “all the pretty horses” and its directed by billy bob thorton

  33. Krysta

has anyone heard of a movie called something like “let virginia run” or something like that? I remember watching it when I was younger and would really like to see it again. Please tell me if you have any ideas! THANKS :)

  34. Krysta

never mind! I found it! It is called “Virginia’s Run” and is a really great movie about a girl who’s mother dies in a riding accident and her father forbids her to ride ever again. But instead, she sectretly trains her mother’s horses foal for a race. I don’t remember much more, but I was really young when I watched it. I think that they might of made some mistakes though, these were definitaly not equestrians, just actors… I haven’t seen it in a while and dont remember but I have heard that they put a horse in the trailer backwards… other than that, it was a good children’s movie…

  35. Karen

Two more to add to you list; however I do not have the years.

Florian (Lippizan Stallion) with Robert Young 1940?

Wild Horse Hank with Linda Blair

  36. Susan

Hey has anyone seen a movie about a boy and his family who live on a ranch and the boy ends up being paralized in a horse accident, and his grandfather makes him a saddle with a back so he can still compete in roping?? I love this movie but cannot seem to remember the title and I can’t find it anywhere? Any suggestions?

    1. Terrie

I beleive you are asking about Everything that Rises. Starring Dennis Quaid. Excellent Movie! It was put out by Warner Brothers, it was a TNT Original TV movie but as I said is out on Video.

  37. Sarah

Theres an Irish movie you missed called ‘Into The West’ with Gabriel Byrne. I can’t remember it too well but its a beautiful movie about 2 kids in Dublin who steal a Grey show jumping horse and travel out to the west of Ireland with him…or try to anyway. Heres a link to a trailer –
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TOAb-sUCm7U

    1. Stefany

      1. cynthia

  39. Paige

    Hi Mona,

Perhaps something like The Horse in the Gray Flannel Suit or Racing Stripes for one so young. I’m pretty sure they are both very family friendly. Unfortunately I haven’t seen them all, but there may be more that readers can recommend.

  40. Linda

I too remember a movie when I was a young child, about age 5 or 6, I believe the movie was made in the 50’s. It was an all time favorite movie when I was very young. The only thing I can remember about the movie was it was about a girl and a white horse, and the horse was named Starfire. I did some seaching online, but could not find anything. I would love to see the movie again.

    1. Linda 2

I thought Starfire was a Saturday morning show. I would love to find out if anyone knows where to get ahold of the show/movie……

  41. Sarah

There is a really good version of black beauty from Brittain, I have it taped from the tv, it is older. It is about a young woman who rides black beauty and is of an age to be married, through the courtship Merrylegs is introduced and both girl and horse have obstacles to overcome. I don’t know if there was ever a video release, it was a great movie.

  42. Elizabeth

You fogot Spirit Rider. It’s about a Native American boy who tames a wild horse so he can compete in a race. A Wonderful movie.

  43. Nargie

I am trying to find a move where a wagon train is attached and a young boy, a young girl and a big red horse survive and the horse helps lead them to safety… I recall a fight between the bear and the horse and I believe the horse dies in the movie but got the children to safety….

Can anyone help me with the name of the move …who’s in it… where to purchase it….

    1. Beth

Hi, I know the movie you mean, but I can’t find it either… i used to have it on vhs. I’m pretty sure it’s called Big Red, but not 100% on that.
I know the story line though.
The dad is with the military braking broncs, while the family took the wagon train to meet him. On the way the wagon train is raided, and the mother is killed.
The children survive because the boy went to find his horse, or the little girl was pickign apple or both..anyways, an indian brave takes a liking to the horse and tries to steal it, but the children manage to get it back.

They then set out to find the dad on horse back with the native tracking them.
They finally find their dad, and the native lets the children keep the horse after stealing it away.

  44. Melissa

Does anyone know the following movie… I saw it in the early 80s and all I can remember are hazy details about the end – a little boy and little girl both want the same horse and at the end of the movie I think they let the horse choose and it chooses the boy.. sorry to be so foggy on details.

    1. Rebecca

Ride a Wild Pony – (1975) filmed in Australia – poor boy, rich girl & the horse has to choose between the two – it’s available from Amazon – I just bought it for my (horse-crazy) daughter. I saw it as a kid & loved it.

      1. Sofia

Thank you so much!!! I have been looking for that film for years… I remember seeing it when I was about nine or ten in a double bill with the animated version of 101 Dalmatians. Can’t believe I now have a lead on it. You’re a star and THANK YOU!!!

      2. rosa

  59. Deb

I’m Showing my age now: but as a kid I watched every Saturday morning a show called “Fury” , about a horse and the boy who loved him. I understand that its now available on DVD thru amazon. The quality of the film seems to be 1950’s – 1960’s black and white, but it was a good family show

Hoping someone can help me with this query, and old movie set during the World War, where a group of american soldiers on an island find a horse, the island is also full of japanese soldiers. At the end the soldiers are picked up by a battleship to return home and they are told to leave the horse behind, but they drop the back of their craft and get the horse to swim out to them.
Going bonkas trying to rememember the name of it.

  61. Jake

“To Ride A Wild Pony” (1975) was the story of the little boy who had a pony and it accidently got mixed up in a wild herd and was sold to a little girl, so they both wanted the pony and in the end the pony chooses the boy.

I saw a movie when I was a kid called “Three Warriors” (1978) about an Indn kid who goes to live on the reservation and he’s really bummed about having to be there and his grandfather gets him a horse and he learns to respect his grandfather and his history. I don’t think it was ever released on video or dvd….but I wish I could see it again.

I do remember “Wild Horse Hank”. That was a good one.

    1. angela

Three Warriors is such an awesome movie i have it on VHS that i taped from TV a bit fuzzy but still love watching it.Would love to get it on DVD.

  62. Melissa

hazy black & white memories of a girl & horse movie that I thought was National Velvet, but NV is on color.
girl was a brunette but not Margaret O’Brien or Elizabeth Taylor.
recently watched National Velvet with my 7 yr old and was very surprised– it was not the movie I have memories of. what other black & white horse & young girl movies are there?

  66. Elizabeth

Another of my favorites is the tv series, Heartland. It’s about this girl named Amy who’s mother was killed in an automobile accident. Amy has to take over her mothers job of retraining abused and spoiled horses. It’s a wonderful series. It ps based on a series of books. Also, I was on a website that sells dvds and saw that Heartland has been put on dvd. Highly recommended!

    1. borntoridesarafina

Elizabeth i agree with you heartland is fantastic i have been watching iton netflix but it only allows up 2 season 2 episode 9 and i have really been wanting to watch the rest it comes back on in september but the problem for me is that its aired in canada and i live in pennsylvania it wont allow me to watch it online or on tv do you know if you are able to buy the dvd set online?

  68. Karina

Hello! Thank you for the great movie list!!! I’ve been trying to find a good list of horse movies. One more suggestion: there is another movie called Dark Horse made in circa early 90’s in addition to the one you already have listed. Thanks again!

  69. Ms. Swann

    Hi,

Thank you for this great site!
I’m looking for a movie that’s about a teenager boy that goes to his grandparents for the holiday. When he stays there for a couple of weeks he goes on a horseback riding trip with his grandfather, they meet some friends of his grandfather and make a long trip.
On their way there happens something terrible (I won’t tell what) but then he planns to ride to the coast.
I think it’s a movie made between 1990 – 2002 because of the technology and stuff.. I really found it a beautiful story. I only can’t get to the name of the movie..
    Thanks in Advance everyone!!

  70. Casca

Your description of Spirit Stallion of the Cimarron is a little off… the Lakota Indian who helps Spirit is a boy, not a girl 😉

Wow I see some of my favourite movies of all time listed here, thanks for posting!

  71. Jake

What about the movie “Peter Lundy and the Medicine Hat Stallion” (1977?)? It was the movie version of the book by Margaret Henry.

(Also, even though these movies weren’t exactly about the horse, the horse was a good part of the movie:
    “Ladyhawke” and “Dances With Wolves”)

  72. Jake

    Sorry….one more:

There was this movie called “Brady’s Run” (1984) which was about a soldier in WWII who gets shot down over Hungary and is saved by the horsemen who lived in the area and help him to get across the border. The horse in the beginning of the movie (in America) is very old and sick and the old man has to consider putting him down….then they flashback the story of the man’s adventure and why the horse means so much to him. The movie was one of the only other movies that Kelly Reno of “The Black Stallion” played in. It’s also called “The Long Ride” and “Hosszu Vagta”.

    1. rose

I know a movie thats called “The Colt” well basically its in the civil war time and this boys horse has a foal and hes about to shoot it but he doesnt and the colt just tags along through the war and ends up almost bringing the two sides together but then the boy gets shot and dies

  73. patrice carline

Thanks Jake but the movie i am referring to is a WESTERN that is a comedy…but i appreciate your suggestions!!!! patrice

My daughter loved it.She’s very inspired by racing movies. She also enjoyed Racing Stripes about the zebra who thinks it’s a race horse! 😉
Thanks again for the great list – going to spread it around!

The one movie that I didn’t see on this list or the recommended list was Coyote Summer. The one movie I fell in love with when I was a kid. Can’t seem to find it again. Hope you guys enjoy this movie if you haven’t seen it already.

This movie was an english cross county movie, saw it on tv I think was maybe 4 hours long or two series. It was about girls in the country training for cross country, jumping over obsticales in the woods up and down. There were two diff group of girls. Prob in teens in proper dress you could see horses from court yard there dorms were in the same area. It was an older film I still think about it, hopfully you can help me out. I would be so happy!!!!!!

  80. Melissa

hi I was wondering if someone could help me try and figure out the name of a movie I saw when I was younger. I think I saw it in the late 80’s/90’s. I remember it started out at farm with a young boy and a young girl that were close friends. The girl goes away to school and comes back some years later, after the death of her father (I think), When she comes back she has a fiance and a love triangle begins between her fiance & her old boyfriend. She has to help try to save the farm and I remember one of the farm hands mentioning that her father had kept up her jockey license so she enters the race and saves the farm. She also ends up with the old boyfriend. If anyone has any ideas I would be very greatful. 😀

  81. Elise

Hi ! great side. I was just wondering if anyone recognize a movie from 80-90s I think. I saw it when I was little, but can’t remember the name, just some small clips from the movie. I remember a black horse and it is in the middle of the night at a racingtrack and it is heavy rain ! I also remember some lightning, and they try to train him. A boy and a man. And they hide it from the boys mother. and I remember something about his father or something died or got killed and something about gambling.

    1. Melanie T.

      Hi Elise!

I’m 99.9% sure the movie you’re thinking of is “The Black Stallion” – as I remember distinctly the racetrack in the pouring rain scene. :) Hope this helps! And I do believe the film is still available on DVD/VHS.

      Best,

    2. Kirra

Hi I am pretty sure the movie you are looking for is “The Black Stallion” its got Mickey Rooney in it as the trainer Henry Dailey.

  82. lyndsey

    Love this list!
Maybe someone will be able to help me find the name of a movie I’ve been looking for for years.
I don’t remember much about it, it may have been a made for TV or a Disney Channel movie.
Anyway, it was about a girl who lived in a trailer I believe somewhere near a ranch, I remember her sneaking onto the ranch and hiding in a stall with a “crazy” horse, and she ended up being the only one able to ride/train it. There was another girl at the ranch who was spoiled and rich with an expensive barrel horse, and the first girl wanted to beat her. The rich girl ends up injuring her horse the day of the rodeo because she refused to warm him up, and the first girl decides to let her use the horse she trained.
    Any ideas?
    It’s killing me.

  83. Barbara

Sounds like “Second Chances” and the day of the rodeo, the girl offers her horse to the spoilt brat to ride.
The crazy horse was named Ginger, and the spoilt brat’s expensive horse was called Steel.

  84. lyndsey

    Yes yes yes!!!!!
That’s it, I realized after I posted that the horses name might have been Ginger.
    That’s exactly it!
    Thanks so much!

  85. Amie-Michelle

I like the movies: The Saddle Club, Everything that rises, Flicka, Winky’s horse, moondance alexander, Racing stripes, The horse whisperer, Dreamer, coyote summer, and How the west was fun. For horse movies, if you want to know some good people or other animal movies just tell me

  86. Jan

  87. Carol

do you know if I can get a copy of Gallant Bess with marshall thompson. I was after the name of this film for at least 20 years. I found the name, but can not get hold of the film.

I see this when a was a little girl.

  88. John Corey

What about LOST IN THE FOG? It’s perhaps the greatest documentary ever made about horse racing. It’s the story of the proverbial “Big Horse” and the intense joy he brought to his loving owner and trainer.

  91. Elizabeth

    hi natasha,

i used to love flicka but then i learned that 2 horses were killed in the making… very inhumane deaths too. its too bad though i loved the film but i just cant watch it.

    1. Dezy

In the making of Flicka, one of the horses made a misstep, broke it’s leg, and was euthanized. The second horse tripped on it’s lead rope and fell and was kicked in the head by another.

But, overall it was a great movie! :)

  92. John Corey

For anybody interested in a film about a couple of the good guys in racing, checking out LOST IN THE FOG. It’s an amazing movie about the proverbial “big horse” but, more importantly, it documents the love and respect of a couple of true horsemen for their champion colt. Passing up on the Derby to protect their young horse, they were rewarded when he went on to dominate racing in 2005. Awesome, funny, bittersweet.

  93. Stephannie

I think you are missing one way back home

  95. Bob

I saw this posting and I don’t think the answer she got is correct. I saw it last year – I believe on Hallmark. The guy playing the grandfather is a famous actor. The kid hates being at his grandfather’s ranch and wants to return to California, so the grandfather obliges him – by making him ride horseback the whole way.

I have been looking for the movie Bradys Run for years, but I wasnt sure of the name. I had told the plot of the movie to many many people and have searched the internet but to no avail. I couldnt believe it when I read the description on this site from “Jake”, Please if you know how to get ahold of this movie would you Please let me know ? Thanks.

  97. Mel

I thought I had all the horse movies but i’ve found a few listed here I haven’t got and will definately look out for. I have a load – I will try not to make the list too long and hopefully not double up. Any of these movie plots can be found on the net if you search the title.

I’m aussie and I think I have all the aussie horse movies heres some – Barney, Bush Christmas (there’s two the remake is better with a young nicole kidman in it), Casey’s Shadow, Cool Change, Danger Down Under, Devil’s Hill (An awesome kiddies one set in the tasie highcountry I believe and the kids go after there missing cow), Finding Hope (outback horse vet movie), Hammers On The Anvil (I never got into it), Quigley Down Under, The Irishman (Its about his string of heavy horses, its good but also sad), THE OVERLANDERS (Old movie about a cattle drive, The Sundowners (About a sheep drive across the country), The Rogue Stallion (Set in NZ about a wild brumby, a really enjoyable family film and one of the best ones I think I have seen), The Lighthorsemen.

Here’s others I have, I wont add the whole list or you guys would be going through it forever, I will put some of the rarer and also enjoyable ones –

Adventures Of Ragtime, Bite The Bullet, BLUEGRASS(very rare and most enjoyable), By Dawn’s Early Light (I believe this might be the one people have been asking about with the grandpa and grandson as it is about them and a long ride), Champions, Dick Francis Mysteries, Down The Long Hills (The one about the boy, girl and chestnut stallion someone was looking for), Dudley Do-Right, Everything That Rises, Felicity: An American Girl Adventure, Hope Ranch, Hot To Trot (Definately worth the watch, a really funny comedy about a talking horse), Long Shot (I think this was about the blind horse doing dressage), My Friend Flicka series, Miracle Of The WEhite Stallions, Night Ride Home, Run For The Roses, Run Wild Run Free (a very sad movie), Shergar (about the racehorse that dissappeared never to be seen again), Sleepy Hollow, Summer Of The Colt, The Lost Stallions, The Colt, The Moon Stallion, WestWorld (An awesome old movie you have to see), Wild Hearts Cant Be Broken, Wild Horse Hank, Gypsy Colt, Wild Horses (Starring Kenny Rogers).

Heres a few good Documentaries as well – Animal Nation – Wild Horses, Ballad Of The Irish Horse, Cloud – Wild stallion of the Rockies,Movie Horses Down Under (You probably wont get unfortunately, its all about the aussie movie horses), Toran: A Dartmoor Pony, ShyBoy, The Horse That Built A Nation (Another about the australian horse you probably cant get).

Sorry if my list is long and boring and hopefully I did not repeat any of the list.

  98. Paige

Thanks so much to everyone leaving new movies in the comments! It’s fun to find new ones from horse lovers around the globe! :)

  99. Christy

OK…I am hoping for some help here. When I was a girl in the 70’s…Saturday morning movies came on TV. There was one movie about a colt that could fly. It’s not a cartoon! Seems like it was on a farm…maybe had some mountains around…like it was in New Mexico or Arizona? A girl and a boy…maybe brother and sister. I have sketchy memories of it…but LOVED it! Anyone know what I’m talking about? My daughter is a horse lover and I would love to get this one for her.

  100. Mel

I wish I could help you Vicky, I have brady’s escape on DVD, I copied from video to dvd after it was on Foxtel many many years ago (I have actually yet to watch it though for some reason). Have you looked for it on video or dvd on the net??? even I have found looking on ebay I have gotten some DVD’s and rare videos from over america and Great Britain that you can’t get in Australia or seem to fin anywhere else.

Another good movie is The Little Rider’s – its not actaully a horse movie so to speak – its set during the war and I think its set in holland (been awhile since I have watched it), the clock is a special one with each hour having a different specially handmade horse and rider and the girl wants to save the horse and riders which her grandfather (I believe) made, cus the germans at the time are going around melting everything down for ammo and stuff and she gets help from an unlikely source. It really is a wonderful movie.

  101. Kali

Ok I’m really hoping for some help there’s this one movie I’ve seen in 7th grade and I really miss it hopefully this will help It had something to do with the black horse I think the horse was a Friesian horse but some how ended up out in the wild and these people have been trying to capture to take it back to their ranch i think but the horse was so famous that there was this man who kept trying to steal it but couldn’t until the end when the girl was suppose to race with him (horse) the man actually got him until she chanced them and stole it back and the only thing they could do was barrel race because of the race had already started all I know is it’s not black beauty or any of the black stallions.

  102. victoria

  103. Sheena Hooke

Thank you so much for this awesome list!! A movie that I didn’t see on here was Coyote Summer(1996) I believe it was the same movie “Heather asked about on September 8, 2009 at 11:12 pm” http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0115961/ and a like for the trailer is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CIRkUaAGJ3w Its a really great movie I saw years ago and have been hunting for ever since. Its about a girl who gets in trouble for racing and is sent to live with her aunt on a ranch. They have a gorgeous young filly/mare that was bred to be a barrel racer. The aunts trainer starts to drug the mare so that she acts crazy and the girl catches him but no one believes her. I love this movie just have no clue why they used a friesian… haha Merry Christmas!

  104. Katrina

Hi there. I just finished reading your list, it’s really great. Talk about taking a trip down memory lane. I found that it was interesting that even though I couldn’t remember what the name of the movies were, I always knew what they were about. I do have one that I believe should be on your list though. I don’t know if anyone remembers a movie called “Into The West”. It was made in 1993, I think. It was about two Irish boys that had run away from their father on a white stallion given to them by their grandfather. It’s a great movie, I would recommend that you check it out.

  105. Don Morris

I am looking for a wild horse/pony movie that involved Eastern European small horses in the Central Plains of Eastern Europe (Steps?). It may have been Hungarian or Czech. Plot involved mostly young people/kids trying to keep the horses away from the invading army (WW1? Germany) who wanted them for pack animals and food. This movie has some of the most breathtaking riding and horse scenery I have ever seen.

The movie was within a couple of years of Tom Barringer’s, In Pursuit of Honor, 1995. [Great riding] I have scoured the internet and come up dry. I can not even seem to find a movie log showing it. It may have been dubbed, and it was based on a true story.

The movies above Hosszú vágta (The Long Ride) sounds like it could be it, but I thought it was more involved and sinister with the advancing army. I’ll have to check out the title.

  106. Notua

Hey Elise! The movie you’re talking about is definitely the Black Stallion. I put it on not all that long ago for my little sister to watch.

  107. Notua

Here’s a couple of horse/horse related movies I’ve found, but haven’t actually seen: Peter Lundy and the Medicine Hat Stallion, and Brighty of the Grand Canyon. Both are available on DVD and based off of books written by Marguerite Henry of “Misty of Chincoteague” fame. All are great reads too. I’ve alsso found an Australian animated series titled The Silver Brumby, which is based off of books written by Elyne Mitchell. Thanks for the list, I’ve always enjoyed horses and am happy to contribute!

Thank you so much for the list. I absolutely love movies and of course horses. I think Seabiscuit and Dreamer are my two favorites. I can see a few other titles here that I might have to go out and buy.

The same happened in The Man From Snowy River 2 (Return To Snowy River as some countries call it) 1 horse was put down as he broke his leg during his stunt. You will know which stunt when you watch the movie.

Does anyone remember a film about a Trotter who is sold bebause he keeps breaking stride. Later he helps rescue someone/thing and doesnt break stride earning a second chance

I am adding to the base of my post.
The trotter movie I was looking for is Disney’s “The tattooed Police Horse” been trying to find it for ages and haven’t any luck.

      1. Brian Lansburgh

My father produced it and the central character’s name was Martin Hanley, named after the San Francisco mounted policeman who taught him to ride. He went on to a great career as a horseman and filmmaker and never forgot his old mentor.

There are a number of Disney movies such as Ride A Wild Pony (1975) and Hang Your Hat on the Wind (1969?). You can get Ride A Wild Pony through Amazon but the other is not available to my knowledge.

    1. Brian Lansburgh

Hang Your Hat on the Wind was another of my father’s. Not my favorite. His best horse picture was probably Horse with the Flying Tail and his best dog picture (and the best picture he ever made) The Wetback Hound. Both won Oscars. Maybe the Academy does know what it’s doing.

The Movie with Kirk Douglas and his horse (a mare) Whiskey, was called “Lonley Are The Brave”. Which Mr. Douglas said it was “his favorite” movie that he had made. I believe the Sheriff who played in the movie was Walter Mathau (I know that is spelled wrong). Also the “Strawberry Roan” was the only movie that Gene Autry ever made in Color. Both are favorite movies of mine. Also, Gypsy Colt which I saw in the theater as a child and The Black Stallion movies (first two)made with Mickey Rooney, Kelly Reno, and Cass’Ole. I’m 68 years old and read EVERY Walter Farley book he wrote during my Study Hall in Hi School, over 52 years ago. Thank you for this site. A lot of movies mentioned here I have never seen.
