Horse Breeds Beginning With U

Horse breeds that start with UIt’s horse breed Thursday again and time to meet another letter of the equine world. Make sure you visit the breeds section where I’ve written pages about every breed I can find.

Today it’s about breeds that start with U, from the handsome Ukrainian Riding Horse which was almost destroyed in 1931 to the hard to pronounce Uzunyayla recently developed in Turkey.

The U’s are another tiny category, so be sure to get to know all of them!

Big Daddy U’s

With only four breeds to choose from, they may not be such big daddies. The Punjabi Unmol is said to have been brought to the Punjab by Alexander the Great; and the hardy Upper Yenisei which come from ancient Tuva blood.

Personal Favorite U’s

The smaller letters force my hand when it comes to favorites & how could you not love all of the U’s? This week it’s the Ukrainian (or Russian) Riding Horse as only 10 animals survived the year of 1931 and they are still around to tell the tale; and the Uzunyayla whose ancestors are thought to come from the Caucasus.

What’s Your Favorite U?

It’s almost harder to pick a favorite when there are so few of them. However I’ll go with the Unmol, whose name roughly translates to “priceless” which makes it clear how important they were to the people who bred them.
