Horse Breeds Beginning With P

It’s horse breed Thursday again and time to meet another letter of the equine world. The breeds section has hundreds of different animals & I hope you’ll meet them all.

Today it’s about breeds that start with P, from the tiny Padang Pony developed by the Dutch on the Indonesian island of Sumatra to the ancient Przewalski’s Horse the only surviving breed of wild equidae still alive.

The P’s are a large and vibrant category, full of interesting characters & types.

Big Daddy P’s

With such a huge category, there are a lot of old breeds to choose from, but here are some of the oldest. The incredibly rare Pentro which has been bred in Italy for the last millennia; the bulky-but-handsome Percheron whose ancient origins are a mystery; and the Polesian Horse native to the marshy regions of Byelorussia since before the 2nd century BC.

Personal Favorite P’s

This P’s are a large group of distinguished breeds so narrowing it down took some time. However in surveying them all I’ve decided on my three favorites. The hardy Pechora who live in the extreme conditions found around the polar circle; the Pintabian because who can argue with a spotted Arabian; and the bulky, beautiful Poitevin known primarily for breeding strong mules.

What’s Your Favorite P?

There are a lot of great breeds that start with P, but my favorite this week is the Poitevin, simply because they aren’t very well known and breed one heck of a good mule.
