Still writing those breed pages and finding a new favorite every day. The needs of mankind are a large part of the development of the equine species & each breed plays a large part of history itself.
If you haven’t already checked out the A’s, be sure to meet them. But today it’s all about breeds that begin with B, from the to the Baguales to the Byelorussian Harness Horse.
Each breed opens up a whole new layer of history, and the stories come from all corners of the earth. No matter where they come from, these breeds are all a unique reflection of ourselves.
Big Daddy B’s
There are some pretty old guys that begin with B & not all of them have made huge contributions to modern breeds, however their age speaks for itself. First & perhaps the oldest is the robust little Basque Pony who is thought to date back some 10,000 years. Then there is the mighty Barb whose blood flows through the likes of the Andalusian & Thoroughbred. And we can’t forget the thick Belgian Draft who is the father of most modern draft breeds.
Personal Favorite B’s
As always, the older breeds have a special place in my heart, but my favorite B’s aren’t all as old. I like the desert Baluchi Horse because their ears turn in at the tip like the Marwari; the sturdy Ban-ei because they race pulling some serious weighted sleds; the curly-haired Bashkir that has been bred by the Bashkari people since before the Mongolians invaded; and the lovely blonde Black Forest Horse just for their flaxen coloring.
