Horse Breeds Beginning With N

Horse breeds that start with N It’s time to learn a little more about our giant domesticated horse world and visit another letter of the breed alphabet. I had no idea there was so many different breeds until I started researching…and by then it was too late, I was hooked.

If you haven’t met the rest of the alphabet, be sure to do so A | B | C | D | E | F | G | H | I | J | K | L | M. Today it’s about breeds that start with N, from the now extinct Namaqua Pony of South Africa to the relatively new Novokirghiz developed in Kirghizia early in the 20th century.

The N’s are full of names that are difficult to pronounce & this category contains perhaps the most African horses of any letter.

Big Daddy N’s

The N’s are a great cross section of horse types and come from a wide range of cultures & climates. Interestingly enough many of the N breeds are newer (like 20th century new), although there are a few golden oldies to share. There is the mysterious Navarra whose origins in northern Spain are unknown; the New Forest Pony whose likeness was first recorded on pottery from the 1st century AD; the handsome cold weather Noriker which has been bred in Alpine Austria for the last 2 millennia; and the ancient Norwegian Fjord one of the few breeds to retain & consistently reproduce it’s original physical characteristics.

Personal Favorite N’s

It’s never easy to pick a favorite, but I had no problem with the N’s. They are all amazing animals, but three of them stand out to me more than the rest. First the Wild horses of the Namib mainly because they aren’t indigenous to the desert, but have adapted so well; the Nederlands Spotted Pony which I could find not one word of information about, but did find some amazing pictures; and the striking Nonius Horse from Hungary because I find the heavier carriage types robust & handsome.
