Horse Breeds Beginning With T

Horse breeds that start with T It’s horse breed Thursday again and time to meet another letter of the equine world. Make sure you visit the breeds section where I’ve written pages about every breed I can find.

If you haven’t met the rest of the alphabet, be sure to do so A | B | C | D | E | F | G | H | I | J | K | L | M | N | O | P | Q | R | S. Today it’s about breeds that start with T, from the incredibly rare Taishu Horse from western Japan to the rugged Tuva from the unforgiving climates of Siberia.

The T’s are a good crowd and full of interesting characters – horses representing cultures of the world.

Big Daddy T’s

There are plenty of old breeds in the T’s and interestingly enough many of them are northern types as well. There is the ancient Tarpan now extinct but attempts have been made to re-create their bloodlines; the rare Tchenarani which has been bred in Iran for 2000 years; the small-but-sturdy Tibetan Pony which has been bred there for 4 millennia.

Personal Favorite T’s

It wasn’t as difficult as usual to choose my favorites among the T’s. While I love them all, a few of them stand out in this category. First has to be the sleek English Thoroughbred which has contributed genetics to a wide variety of modern breeds; the colorful Tiger Horse which is registered based on carrying a leopard spotting gene; and the robust Tori from Estonia, the smaller type of which I find quite pleasing to the eye.

What’s Your Favorite T?

While I love them all, my all time favorite of the T breeds is definitely the lovely English Thoroughbred simply for their gift of genetics to the greater horse world.
