Horse Breeds Beginning With Z

It’s horse breed Thursday again and time for the final letter of the breed alphabet. Make sure you visit the breeds section where I’ve written pages about every breed I can find.

If you haven’t met the rest of the alphabet, be sure to do so A | B | C | D | E | F | G | H | I | J | K | L | M | N | O | P | Q | R | S | T | U | V | W | X | Y. Today it’s about breeds that start with Z from the springy Zangersheide bred solely for jumping to the noble bearing of the Zweibrucker.

The last letter of the alphabet is well represented with the Z breeds, there are some amazing animals here!

Big Daddy Z’s

Interestingly enough, most of the Z’s are fairly recent breeds and came about within the past few centuries. The oldest of this category are the Zhumd a relative of the Konik and bred in Lithuania since the 16th century; and the handsome Zweibruker which has been meticulously bred in Germany since the 18th century.

Personal Favorite Z’s

With so few to choose from my favorites of the Z’s is a no brainer. The athletic Zangersheide which is literally born to jump; the Zaniskari Pony from India whose liberal breeding practices have left very few pure blooded animals; and the Zeeland which is an old Dutch breed I couldn’t find any information about.
